I’ve been reading up on modern bomber fleets and it feels like every few years someone says bombers are “obsolete,” then they show up again in a conflict or a deterrence deployment. With drones getting better, cruise missiles everywhere, and air defenses improving, I’m trying to understand what strategic bombers are actually for in 2026 and beyond.
Are they still a core tool for deterrence and long-range strike, or are they becoming too expensive/too vulnerable compared to missiles, submarines, and unmanned systems? I’m not looking for classified stuff—just a grounded discussion from people who follow doctrine and real-world ops. Where do you see bombers fitting in 10–20 years?
