I keep hearing that “the next war will be cyber” and that future conflicts will be decided by hacking, misinformation, and AI systems rather than soldiers and tanks. I’m not denying cyber is huge, but it feels like every time there’s a real conflict, territory still gets taken by people with weapons, supply lines matter, and someone has to physically hold ground.

I work in IT (not security) and I’m trying to make sense of what “primarily online” even means in practice. Like: could a major war be won without large-scale kinetic fighting, or is online warfare more of a shaping tool that enables traditional operations? Curious what you all think—especially in terms of history, modern doctrine, and what the battlefield might look like in 10–30 years.

“Primarily online” is a seductive phrase, but history shows new domains rarely replace old ones; they layer on top. Sea power didn’t eliminate land campaigns. Airpower didn’t eliminate infantry. Nuclear weapons didn’t eliminate conventional wars.

If you read Clausewitz, war is about compelling an enemy to do your will; that still ties back to politics, population, and control. Even in WWII, strategic bombing and signals intelligence mattered enormously, yet victory still required occupying territory and breaking fielded forces. In the Cold War, the “revolution” was C3I, early warning, and electronic warfare—still paired with armored corps and naval task forces.

Cyber is closer to sabotage, espionage, and subversion than it is to a standalone war-winning weapon. It can paralyze mobilization, degrade logistics, blind sensors, and fracture public trust—real effects. But unless the political objective is limited (coercion, punishment, disruption), you eventually hit the old reality: to change borders or topple regimes, somebody has to secure physical nodes—capitals, ports, airfields, power plants. Online war is the prelude and accompaniment, not the replacement.

If networks get jammed or hacked, you need comms that degrade gracefully: radios with good encryption, simple signal plans, paper backups, and power solutions that don’t depend on a fragile grid.

I think future fights look like soldiers carrying more anti-drone and EW-adjacent gear: compact spectrum scanners, battery management, maybe even basic camouflage designed to beat cheap thermal drones. Also more emphasis on ruggedization—waterproofing, EMP-ish protection where practical, and redundant navigation (map/compass + inertial + GNSS).

So yeah cyber matters, but it drives demand for better field equipment and training, not a world where nobody leaves a keyboard.

I’ve seen enough “the system is down” moments in training and ops to be skeptical that wars go mostly online. When comms fail, people fall back to basics fast: pre-briefed plans, phase lines, runners, simple reporting formats.

Cyber attacks can slow a unit, cause confusion, mess with morale, and make leadership decisions harder. But it doesn’t replace the job of moving, securing, and holding. And holding is the key word—once you take a bridge, a depot, a hill, you still need bodies and discipline to keep it.

What I do think changes is tempo: if you can knock out logistics software or spoof tracking, you can create chaos behind the front line. But you’ll still see mud, fatigue, supply problems, and the usual friction. Online warfare is just another way to add friction.

If you can hack, jam, or deceive that loop, you can cripple an opponent without necessarily destroying every platform.

But air superiority is ultimately about controlling the sky with real aircraft, real missiles, and real bases. Cyber might ground sorties by messing with logistics or maintenance systems, but you can’t enforce a no-fly zone with a keyboard.

I do think future air wars are less about dogfights and more about network survival: stealth + EW + distributed ops + hardened airfields. If the network collapses, you revert to simpler tactics, but the fight continues.

If you’re asking this because you’re considering a career move: cyber is becoming a major part of militaries, but it’s not the only path. Most forces are expanding cyber, signals, intelligence, and EW roles alongside traditional combat and support jobs.

“Primarily online” doesn’t mean future militaries won’t need infantry, mechanics, medics, logisticians, and engineers. It means more of those roles will rely on networks and will train to operate when networks fail.

Special operations are a reality check for the “online only” idea. Even in a world of cyber and AI, you still need humans to confirm, influence, sabotage, and build relationships on the ground.

If cyber can open a door, SOF can walk through it: seize a key site, capture hardware, raid a command node, or train partner forces. Also, when networks are compromised, small units operating with mission command and limited comms become more valuable, not less.

Future wars will use more cyber prep and more remote systems, but there’s a reason elite units still obsess over basic fieldcraft, mobility, and close coordination with air/ISR assets. The “online” layer sets conditions; people still execute.

But when stakes escalate—territory, regime survival, alliance credibility—states still lean on conventional force. Cyber becomes one instrument in a broader toolkit: intelligence prep, sabotage, narrative control, and disruption of mobilization.

Also, defenses improve. Once a vulnerability is exploited, it gets patched, segmented, or replaced. That makes purely cyber-based victory hard to sustain. The more existential the conflict, the more likely you see a mix of cyber, sanctions, covert action, and conventional operations.

I think the cleanest model is: future wars are multi-domain, but the decisive contest is often “systems vs systems.” One side tries to keep its sensing-targeting-strike chain intact while breaking the other’s.

In many scenarios, the opening phase is heavily online: prepositioning malware, mapping networks, influence operations, and attacks on satellites/communications/EW nodes. If that phase succeeds, the kinetic phase can be shorter and more one-sided.

However, in wargames and real planning, you almost always end up with a physical requirement: secure ports for sustainment, airfields for sorties, cities/terrain for political control. Online effects can enable rapid maneuver, but rarely substitute for it.

But robots still occupy physical space and consume energy, parts, and bandwidth. When the network is contested, you’ll see more local autonomy, more hardened links, and more human oversight. The fight stays very real—just increasingly mediated by code and machines.
