I’m trying to upgrade my comms setup for field training weekends and general preparedness. I’m not looking for “top tier no matter what,” I’m looking for the best value for money in radio equipment that actually works reliably outdoors.
Right now I’m using a basic handheld with the stock antenna and an earbud PTT, and it’s… fine, but range is inconsistent and accessories feel flimsy. I’m open to handheld vs mobile, better antenna solutions, a durable headset/PTT, and anything that improves clarity without wasting cash. Assume I’m operating around woods/rolling terrain, sometimes from a vehicle, usually small-team distances.
What brands/models and accessory combos do you feel are the best bang for the buck? Also curious where the “spend more here, save there” line is (radio body vs antenna vs batteries vs headset). I’m fine with general guidance, and I’ll check local rules/licenses and talk to a qualified shop if needed.
