Which military watches offer the best value for money?

I’m looking for a “military style” watch that’s actually practical, not just tacticool. I do a mix of hiking, range days, and some volunteer SAR support, so I want something tough, easy to read at night, and not a heartbreak if it gets scratched. Budget is roughly $80–$350, but I’d stretch a bit if the value is clearly there.

I’m torn between a classic field watch (simple analog, maybe automatic), a G-Shock style beater, or even a used GPS smartwatch. What models do you all think offer the best value for money right now? Bonus points if it has good lume, decent water resistance, and doesn’t require babying.

In the robotics/modern soldier-systems world, the wrist is becoming a human-machine interface space—alerts, navigation cues, biometric-ish data, comms integration. Consumer watches aren’t that, but you can borrow the concept.

If you want future-proof value, a rugged GPS watch (Instinct class) gives you situational tools without the fragility of full smartwatches. If you want maximum resilience and minimum “attack surface,” stick to a non-connected G-Shock solar.

So the value decision is also about what you don’t want: notifications, charging anxiety, and extra complexity vs having track logs and navigation aids when it matters.
