I’m putting together a small “basic skills” checklist for myself and a couple friends before we start doing more overnight hikes and range days that turn into all-day field hangs. I realized I’ve been winging knots for years and it’s fine until you actually need something to hold under load or untie quickly.

If you had to pick ONE knot that everyone should learn first (for survival, camping, vehicle kit, or just general field use), which would it be and why? Bonus points if it works with slick paracord, gloves, and can be inspected quickly. Not looking for exotic knots—just the best first building block.
