I’m putting together a practical navigation setup for rucks, range days, and occasional backcountry trips. I’m not looking for the most high-end GPS ever, just the best value for money: reliable reception, decent battery life, and something that won’t die the first time it gets cold or wet.

I’ve used phone apps (offline maps) and they work, but I want a dedicated unit as a backup—especially for longer days and when cell service is nonexistent. I’m also torn between a basic Garmin eTrex-style unit vs something more modern with better screen/maps.

What models give the best bang for the buck right now? And what features actually matter in the field vs stuff that’s just marketing?
