I’m trying to dial in a simple hydration setup that doesn’t cost a fortune. I do weekend hikes, occasional range days, and some “ruck training” with friends. I’ve bounced between cheap plastic bottles and an old surplus canteen I found at a local store. The surplus canteen works, but the cap and carrier feel flimsy, and I’m not sure what’s actually the best value when you factor in durability and accessories.
What canteens/bottles give the best value for money right now? I’m looking at: classic USGI 1qt canteen + cup, Nalgene-style wide mouth, stainless canteen/bottle options, and the insulated stuff. I’m not trying to be ultra-light, just reliable and not annoying in the field (leaks, weird taste, hard to clean). Bonus points if it pairs well with a canteen cup and a decent pouch.
If it matters: I prefer something I can clean easily, I don’t want to baby it, and I’d rather buy once than keep replacing cheap ones.
