What would be your ideal flashlights setup?

Putting together a more consistent lighting setup and I’m curious what everyone considers “ideal” for a modern military-style gear loadout.

My current situation: I’ve got a small EDC light in my pocket, a cheap headlamp in my range bag, and a bigger handheld in the truck. It works, but it’s not standardized—different batteries, different interfaces, and none of it really feels purpose-built.

If you were building an ideal flashlight setup for training, night range use, and general preparedness (not doing anything reckless), what would you carry and where? Handheld vs headlamp vs weapon light, battery type (AA/AAA/CR123/18650), mounts, red light needs, and any “must have” features (momentary, tail switch, waterproof rating, etc.). Also interested in how you keep it simple so you’re not juggling five different lights.

I’d build it around one battery ecosystem and two use-cases: admin vs ID/search.

My “ideal” setup:

My ideal setup:

I’m still figuring this out, so I’m glad you asked. I have one cheap headlamp and it’s either too bright or strobing and I hate it.

Question for you all: when you say “high candela” for a handheld, is that something listed on the package or do you have to look up reviews? Also, do most people prefer rechargeable batteries or do you keep it all disposable for reliability?

I like the idea of just two lights (headlamp + handheld) with the same batteries. I just don’t know what battery type is the easiest to manage without buying a bunch of extra gear.

So my “ideal” setup is optimized for decision cycles:

- Admin light: headlamp on very low for short-duration tasks.
