I’m putting together my first “serious” sleep setup for camping and some weekend ruck trips. I see a lot of talk about military sleep systems (the layered bag sets, bivy covers, etc.) and also modern backpacking bags/quilts. I don’t want to waste money buying something too heavy or not warm enough.
What should a beginner know before buying a sleep system? Things like temperature ratings, how to layer pieces, whether a bivy is worth it, what kind of sleeping pad matters, and any common mistakes (size, moisture, packing, etc.). I’m not deploying or anything—just trying to build a reliable, durable setup with a “military operations” vibe that actually works in the real world.
