I’m new to rifles and trying to do this the right way. I’ve handled a few at a range with friends, but I’ve never owned one. I’m not looking to “build a cool setup” as much as I’m trying to make a smart first purchase that I can actually learn on.
My main goals are: range practice, learning fundamentals, and maybe basic outdoor use down the line (nothing tactical fantasy). I’m overwhelmed by caliber choices, optics vs irons, price tiers, and what people claim is “reliable.” I also keep hearing conflicting advice about buying new vs used, and how much I should budget for ammo, mags, sling, cleaning gear, and a safe.
For those with experience: what are the key things a beginner should know before buying a rifle? What mistakes do you see new owners make? I know laws vary by location, so I’m not asking for legal advice—more like practical considerations and what to ask at a shop or range.
