I’m putting together a small “go-bag” for hiking and general preparedness, and I keep seeing military rations (MREs, foreign ration packs, freeze-dried, etc.). I’ve never bought any before and I don’t want to waste money on expired stuff or overpriced “tactical” branding.
What should a beginner know before buying rations—like shelf life, storage temps, where to buy, how to tell if they’re legit, and whether they’re actually a good idea compared to normal backpacking food? I’m not trying to live on them, just want something reliable that I can rotate and occasionally test on a weekend trip.
