I’m putting together a basic “military-style” field kit for hiking, range days, and local volunteer events (not doing anything illegal or trying to impersonate). I want radios so I can keep in touch with a couple friends in the woods and during road trips, but I’m totally new to radio gear.
I’m seeing everything from cheap blister-pack walkie talkies to “tactical” handhelds with huge antennas, plus terms like GMRS, FRS, MURS, ham, DMR, repeaters, and programming cables. Before I spend money, what should a beginner know about choosing radio equipment, what actually affects range, and what accessories matter (headsets, PTT, antennas, chargers, etc.)? Also: any common mistakes to avoid when buying or setting up the first radio?
