I’m pretty new to optics and I’m trying to avoid wasting money. I’ve mostly shot with basic irons and a buddy’s red dot a few times. Now I’m looking at getting my first “real” optic and I’m overwhelmed: red dot vs holographic vs prism vs LPVO vs traditional scope. This would mainly be for range use and training classes, not hunting, and I want something reliable that won’t constantly lose zero. I also don’t know how much of the price is the glass vs the brand name.
What should a beginner understand before buying optics (including mounts), and what are the common mistakes people make? I’m not looking for brand wars—just a practical checklist so I buy once and cry once (or at least cry less).
