I’m putting together a basic field kit for weekend hikes and range days, and I keep bouncing between buying a classic military canteen setup (canteen + cup + cover) or just going straight to a modern bottle/bladder. I like the idea of something durable and simple, but I don’t want to waste money on the wrong size, a leaky cap, or something that’s a pain to clean.
For someone brand new to canteens: what should I pay attention to before buying? Things like material (plastic vs metal), cap types, compatibility with covers/cups, taste issues, cleaning, and whether surplus canteens are worth it would all help. Also any “wish I knew this earlier” mistakes to avoid would be appreciated.
