I’m brand new to protective gear and I’m trying to make a smart first purchase instead of impulse-buying whatever looks “tactical.” I do some range time, occasional training classes, and I’m also a hiker/camper, so I’m curious about armor mainly from a preparedness angle. The problem is: I don’t really understand what the ratings mean, what’s marketing fluff, what a realistic budget is, and how to avoid buying something unsafe or uncomfortable.
If you were starting over as a beginner, what should you know before buying body armor? Things like plate materials, NIJ ratings, fit/sizing, weight vs protection, plate carriers, where to buy, and any red flags. I’m not looking for anything illegal or sketchy—just solid general guidance and how to think about the purchase.
