I’m new to military-style gear and I’m trying to buy my first “real” backpack for hiking, range days, and maybe a short overnight. I keep getting lost in liters vs cubic inches, internal vs external frames, and all the tactical features. I don’t want to overbuy some huge ruck I’ll hate carrying, but I also don’t want a flimsy daypack that falls apart.
For a beginner who wants one backpack that can do a bit of everything, what should I know before buying? Things like sizing/fit, capacity, materials, straps, MOLLE, hydration compatibility, and what to avoid would help a lot. If you’ve got a simple checklist you use before purchasing, I’m all ears.
