I’m working on getting in shape for a military path and I keep hearing mixed advice on swimming. Some people say it’s essential, others say it’s only for certain units. I can run decently and do basic calisthenics, but I’m stiff and beat up after long runs, so I’m wondering if swimming is actually useful for overall military fitness or if it’s just a niche requirement.
In your experience, what does swimming contribute (cardio, recovery, mental toughness, water confidence)? And how do different branches/units treat swim ability in training and selection? I’m not looking for secret-squirrel stuff—just realistic guidance on how much swimming matters.
