I’m trying to get more serious about my military-style fitness (rucking, calisthenics, intervals) and I keep going back and forth on competition. On one hand, when I train with a buddy or even just compare times on a route, I push harder and my numbers improve. On the other hand, I’ve seen people get sloppy or overdo it chasing a “win,” and I don’t want injuries or burnout.
For those of you who’ve trained in a military environment (or just have structured performance goals), what role does competition actually play in improving performance? Is it mainly motivation, or does it improve skill/efficiency too? And how do you use competition without letting it wreck your form, recovery, or long-term progress?
