I’ve been reading up on navies and I keep seeing “patrol vessel” used for a lot of different ships (coast guard cutters, OPVs, fast patrol boats, even small corvettes sometimes). On paper they sound like “small ships that do a bit of everything,” but I’m trying to understand their real role.
For context: I live near the coast and see patrol craft regularly, mostly doing what looks like routine presence and checks. But in a wartime or crisis scenario, what do patrol vessels actually contribute compared with bigger ships? Are they mainly for law enforcement and search and rescue, or do navies plan to use them for combat tasks too? And how do they fit with drones, maritime patrol aircraft, and frigates?
I’m looking for practical explanations and maybe some examples of missions they’re built around.
