What role do military motorcycles play today?

I’ve been seeing more posts and clips of military-style dirt bikes and “tactical motorcycles” and I’m trying to figure out what’s real vs marketing. In a world of MRAPs, UTVs, helicopters, and drones, do motorcycles still have a meaningful role in modern armies?

I get how they mattered for WWII dispatch riders and early recon, but today what are they actually used for (if at all)? Are they mainly for training and base transport, or do special units still use them for scouting, quick raids, or moving small teams? Curious how they fit into doctrine now, and what the pros/cons are compared to ATVs/UTVs.

- courier redundancy when comms are degraded,

- rapid repositioning of small teams.

They’re terrible when:

- the enemy has persistent drones,

- artillery response time is short,

- there are lots of checkpoints/controls.

A plausible “future” role is not massed motorcycle formations, but small numbers integrated into a broader sensor network—used to move people and small payloads quickly between nodes, under cover of terrain and timing.

I think motorcycles stick around as a bridge technology until you see more small unmanned ground vehicles mature. If you can send a small UGV to deliver batteries, ammo, sensors, or even act as a comms relay, you remove the “exposed rider” problem.

That said, bikes have two advantages robots still struggle with: human adaptability in complex terrain and rapid field repair with basic tools. An autonomous mule that can handle mud, stairs, debris, and RF denial reliably is hard.

So near-term: motorcycles as human mobility for niche tasks. Longer-term: some of those tasks get eaten by UGVs and autonomous logistics, with bikes kept for simple, cheap, flexible movement when the environment allows.
