I’m trying to understand where destroyers actually fit today, beyond “big ship with missiles.” When I read about carrier strike groups or NATO task forces, destroyers seem to be everywhere, but then I also see frigates doing escorts and cruisers (in some navies) doing air defense. So what’s the modern destroyer’s job description in plain terms?
Are they mainly there for air defense (Aegis-type ships), or are they more like general-purpose combatants that can switch between anti-submarine warfare, land-attack, and anti-ship missions? Also curious how they’re used in real deployments—like patrols, freedom of navigation ops, convoy protection, etc. Would appreciate explanations with examples from different navies if possible.
