I’ve been reading about big-gun ships lately and I’m trying to understand the “real job” of battleships beyond just being huge and intimidating. In WWII they seem like the centerpiece in some books, but in others it sounds like carriers and submarines did most of the decisive work.

So what role did battleships actually play in naval warfare when they were at their peak—sea control, fleet action, convoy escort, shore bombardment, deterrence, something else? And when did their role start to shrink for good? I’m not looking for a meme answer like “they became obsolete overnight,” more like how navies actually used them in practice.
