I’m putting together a small comms setup for training weekends and hiking with friends (think: land nav, some “patrol” style movement, nothing crazy). I’m getting overwhelmed by radio options—GMRS/FRS handhelds, ham handhelds, “tactical” looking radios, headsets, antennas, etc.
What are the most common mistakes people make when choosing radio equipment? I’m especially curious about stuff that looks good on paper but fails in real use: range expectations, interference, waterproofing, battery life, compatibility between teams, programming, and anything licensing-related. Not looking to break rules—just want something reliable and realistic for field use. Any advice on what to avoid would help.
