I’m putting together a practical range/training setup and I’m realizing optics are a rabbit hole. I see people (including me) getting sucked into magnification numbers, “best brand” hype, or copying someone’s build without thinking about how it’s actually used.

For context: I shoot mostly 50–300 yards at an outdoor range, sometimes steel. I don’t do night vision yet, but I might in the future. I’m trying to avoid wasting money on the wrong optic, wrong mount height, wrong reticle, etc.

- Controls that are usable with gloves or cold hands.

- Warranty and service history—because optics can fail and you want a realistic repair path.

Even if you’re just a range shooter today, buying for reliability and support is often the smarter long-term move than chasing the sharpest glass in perfect conditions.

If your use is 50–300, don’t be ashamed to pick something simple and durable that you can run hard. Sexy doesn’t hit steel—consistent reps do.
