I’m trying to buy decent hearing protection for a mix of range time (pistol + rifle, sometimes indoor), occasional hunting, and some loud shop work. I’ve owned cheap foam plugs and one budget set of electronic muffs, but I’m not confident I’m choosing the right thing. I see people arguing about NRR, “tactical” models, gel cups, in-ear vs over-ear, doubling up, etc.
What are the most common mistakes people make when choosing hearing protection? I’m especially interested in things like fit issues, false confidence from marketing, choosing gear that conflicts with rifle stocks/helmets, and how to think about situational awareness vs protection. Not asking for medical advice—just trying not to waste money or mess up my hearing long term.
