But I keep wondering what’s genuinely game-changing versus what’s mostly marketing or only works in perfect test ranges.

From a realistic, in-the-field perspective (maintenance, training, supply chain, weather, countermeasures), what military vehicle technology do you think is overrated right now? I’m not trying to dunk on innovation—just curious what the community thinks doesn’t live up to the hype when bullets, mud, and budgets get involved.

If I had to pick one “overrated” category, it’s anything sold as a decisive technical fix for a doctrinal problem. Historically, wonder-weapons get praised when the institution wants a shortcut.

Or WWII’s recurring faith in a single capability—heavy armor, super guns, miracle engines—without the logistics and combined-arms doctrine to sustain it. Today, I see a similar pattern with some sensor/stealth narratives for ground vehicles: the idea that you can make a big armored box “low observable” enough to negate reconnaissance and targeting. History suggests the enemy adapts: better ISR, different wavelengths, human spotters, drones, and simply using area fires. You add complexity, seals, fluid, sensors, control units, and maintenance burden. In high-tempo operations, the most valuable “spec” is operational readiness rate.

Also, a lot of vehicle tech discussions ignore the boring fundamentals: ammo stowage and blow-off protection, crew ergonomics for long missions, reliable power distribution, and service access. A tank that’s 5% “better” on paper but 20% harder to keep running is not better in a campaign.

The tech that seems more real-world valuable is anything that improves first-shot capability and reduces exposure time—better stabilization, faster target handoff, better crew training and gunnery workflow—rather than trying to pretend the vehicle is invisible.

Overrated: boutique high-end upgrades that look amazing in limited numbers but don’t scale across a fleet when budgets, spares, and industrial capacity get tight.

A lot of “next-gen” vehicle tech is great—until you ask how many can be produced, how quickly battle damage can be repaired, and whether allies can sustain the same standard. In real conflicts, numbers, logistics, and repair pipelines shape outcomes as much as top-end specs.

The tech isn’t bad; the oversell is pretending procurement realities won’t dilute it. If only the flagship unit gets the full package, the overall force may not change much.

So I’ll vote “perfect situational awareness via sensors and networking” as the overrated concept. In many sims it becomes an always-on advantage that collapses fog of war. In reality, you get partial views, delays, false positives, and coverage gaps—especially with enemy EW and deception.

If you assume a vehicle platoon will always have drone overwatch, always have clean comms, and always have correct track ID, you build fragile tactics. The best forces plan for information loss and keep options when the picture gets blurry.

Overrated: the near-term promise of armed unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) as a straight replacement for crewed combat vehicles.

UGVs are real and useful—scouting, logistics runs in high-risk areas, route clearance support, decoys, remote sensors—but the hype often skips hard problems: control links under EW, autonomy in complex terrain, recovery when they break, and rules/process for lethal use.

I think the “right now” win is smaller: robots that reduce exposure for specific tasks (recon around corners, pulling casualty-sized loads, carrying batteries/ammo). The leap to fully substituting crewed platforms is farther off than marketing suggests.
