I’m trying to build a more accurate picture of “who used what” when it comes to field knives, not just what looks cool in photos. I’ve been going down a rabbit hole of Ka-Bar vs. Gerber vs. Fairbairn-Sykes vs. Morakniv, and it’s hard to separate official issue from personal purchase and unit culture.
Are there specific military units that are widely known for certain knives (either standard issue, commonly carried in a particular era, or strongly associated through training/operations)? I’m mostly interested in modern Western militaries, but WWII/Cold War examples are welcome too. Also curious where the line is between “this unit is known for it” and “a few guys bought it at the PX.”
