I’ve been shopping for a new pack and I’m noticing “military-style” backpacks look really different than the ones I remember from a few years ago. Some are super slim and modular, some have weird laser-cut webbing instead of stitched MOLLE, and a lot of them talk about comms routing, hydration access, and even battery/power pockets.

I’m not in the service—mostly range days, hiking, and preparedness stuff—but I’d like something that’s closer to real-world military trends rather than marketing. What trends in modern militaries (training, doctrine, tech, deployments) are actually changing how backpacks are designed? And which of those changes are worth caring about for a civilian user?
