What makes special forces different from regular infantry?

I keep seeing “special forces” used as a catch‑all online, like any unit that looks cool on camera. I’m trying to understand the real differences compared to regular infantry.

Is it mainly selection and training standards, or is it the mission set (raids, recon, advising)? How much of it is funding/equipment vs doctrine and command structure? And where do units like Rangers/commandos fit compared to “SF” that do foreign internal defense?

Not looking for movie answers—more like what actually changes day to day and why militaries keep both types of units.

The cleanest historical answer is: “special” is a role, not a costume. Regular infantry exists to seize/hold ground and win by mass, endurance, and combined arms. Special forces exist to create outsized effects with small numbers—often by exploiting surprise, intelligence, and political/strategic leverage.
