I’ve been getting more time behind NV (mostly loaner PVS-14 style setups during night shoots and some hiking/navigation practice) and I keep realizing how different “seeing” is under tubes. Stuff that seems obvious in daylight—distance, steps, branches—gets weird fast. Also, I’m still figuring out the best way to balance my helmet, manage a light, and not blast everyone with accidental illumination.

For those with real hours under night vision: what are the biggest lessons you learned the hard way? Anything about movement, target ID, depth perception, admin tasks, or gear setup that you’d tell someone before their first serious night op/training block?

In simulations and force-on-force problems, night advantage collapses when:

So I’d advise: treat NV training like systems training. Build SOPs for scanning, crossing danger areas, halts, link-ups, and lost-person actions. The tech is the easy part; the system is the hard part.
