Been arguing with a buddy after an airshow last weekend. We were looking at photos of “beautiful” aircraft and then the conversation flipped to the opposite: what’s the ugliest military aircraft ever built?

I’m not talking about “I dislike that nation’s plane” politics—just the pure looks: awkward proportions, weird intakes, goofy landing gear, bulbous noses, etc. And yeah, I know ugly doesn’t mean ineffective (sometimes it’s the opposite). I’m curious what the community thinks, and why. Pics/models/firsthand stories welcome.

If we’re doing this like historians, we have to separate “ugly” from “unfamiliar.” A lot of designs that look odd were direct responses to doctrine and technology.

My vote for historically “ugly-but-explainable” is the Blackburn Roc/Skua family and other interwar British oddities—lumpy canopies, awkward turrets, and proportions that scream “committee decision.” Another contender is the Fairey Gannet (postwar, but a Cold War artifact): that double-folding wing and chunky fuselage look like a naval compromise drawn in three different rooms.

The irony is that these shapes are footprints of an era: fleet air defense ideas, early radar, deck handling requirements, and engine limitations. If you want truly ugly, look at the Franken-planes and stop romanticizing “classic lines.” The XF-84H Thunderscreech? The P-61 Black Widow with that bulk? Or a bunch of prototype interceptors with noses that look like someone glued on a vacuum cleaner.

Also: calling something ugly without acknowledging what it’s optimized for is a lazy take. Show me your top 3 and your criteria: nose? wing planform? landing gear stance? Otherwise it’s just vibes.

The UAV world wins this contest because many drones are “ugly by design” to maximize endurance, sensor field-of-view, and comms.

I’d nominate the MQ-9 Reaper family as a mainstream example: long wings, skinny fuselage, bulbous sensor turret, and the pusher prop that makes the silhouette feel backward. Then there are even weirder experimental UAVs with blended bodies and odd tail booms that look like workshop projects.

But “ugly” in UAVs often correlates with performance. Big wings = loiter time. Big radome/sensor ball = better ISR. If you’re building for persistence, you accept aesthetics taking a back seat.

1) The A-10: asymmetric vibe because the airplane is built around the GAU-8, and you can see it. Big gun, big nacelles, big everything.

If anyone reading is thinking of joining (pilot, maintainer, avionics, loadmaster, etc.), you end up appreciating aircraft for safety culture, maintenance practicality, and mission impact—not beauty. The “ugliest” airframe might have the best community, training pipeline, or quality of life.

Also, visiting a base open house or museum and talking to maintainers is the fastest way to understand why certain shapes exist.

From an SOF-adjacent perspective: the “ugliest” aircraft is often the one you trust the most because it’s proven, supported, and shows up.

I’ve heard people clown on stuff like the MH-6 “Little Bird” as looking like a lawn chair with blades, but that compact, stripped-down vibe is exactly why it’s useful in tight urban spots. Same with some ISR platforms that look goofy—if it’s giving you eyes or getting you in quietly, nobody cares.

If we’re voting purely on looks, I’ll say some special-mission modified aircraft are the true winners: extra fairings, antennas, pods, and lumps everywhere. Effective, but visually chaotic.

Question for the aviation folks: are there any planes that were considered ugly when they came out but later became “cool” because of what they did in combat? Like a redemption arc based on history?

Also, are prototypes usually uglier because they’re rushed, or is that just my perception?

My ugly pick: specialized electronic warfare and ISR aircraft with multiple pods and antennas—pure capability, zero aesthetic discipline. But strategically, those are the aircraft that shape the whole fight by blinding, jamming, cueing, and targeting.

If we’re talking fighters, some designs look awkward because they’re optimized for specific flight regimes (high alpha stability, big lifting bodies, massive inlets for certain engines). The silhouette is basically a strategy: get first look, first shot, survive, and repeat.

The “ugliest aircraft” debate is going to get stranger as crewed/uncrewed teaming grows. Future combat aircraft may look less like classic jets and more like flying sensor nodes: blended bodies, distributed apertures, conformal antennas, and bays shaped around autonomy hardware.

Some current experimental UCAVs already look like geometry problems, and that’s the point—low observability and efficient internal volume. Add modular mission kits and you’ll see more “lumpy” external fairings in test phases.

So if you want a forward-looking answer: many of the ugliest will be the most advanced, because stealth shaping and sensor placement don’t care about human ideas of beauty.
