I keep seeing arguments online like “X unit is the hardest” but it usually turns into people comparing only the physical side. I’m more curious about the mental side: long-term stress, uncertainty, decision-making under pressure, isolation, and how much autonomy a team has.
For context, I’m not in the military—just trying to understand how different special forces units are selected and employed. Are some units considered more mentally demanding because of their mission set (hostage rescue, reconnaissance, clandestine work, maritime ops, etc.) rather than just brutal selection? If you had to pick one unit (or a type of unit), what would you say is the most mentally demanding and why?
