I’m putting together a reading list and also just curious what people here think: what’s the most dangerous military aviation mission, and why?

I’m not talking “which aircraft is most dangerous,” but the actual mission types—CAS down low, SEAD/DEAD against integrated air defenses, combat search and rescue, helicopter medevac into hot LZs, carrier night ops, special operations infil/exfil, etc.

If you’ve got history examples, training perspective, or even “it depends on the threat environment,” I’d love to hear it. Also interested in how the answer changes between peer/near-peer conflicts vs COIN.

Not asking for anything sensitive—just the general discussion you’d hear in a professional setting.

Historically, the “most dangerous” missions are the ones that force aircraft into predictable paths and altitudes under concentrated defenses. In WWII, that was daylight unescorted bombing early in the campaign (think Schweinfurt–Regensburg, 1943) and low-level attacks against hardened targets. Loss rates weren’t just about courage; doctrine and technology hadn’t caught up with threat density.

From the ground perspective, the most dangerous aviation missions are the ones tied to ground contact and constrained routes—because ground threats are dense and opportunistic. In a peer war, mechanized formations are moving under layered SHORAD plus long-range SAM coverage. That means any aviation mission that has to come low to be effective (helo lift, medevac, some CAS) gets squeezed between radar-guided systems and the guy with an IR missile.

I look at it from the survivability angle: the most dangerous missions are the ones where a downed crew has the lowest chance to evade, hide, and be recovered. When you push aviation closer to the fight, you increase sortie rate—but you also compress safety margins.

If you model this in a campaign sim, the “most dangerous” mission often emerges as the one with (a) highest exposure time in contested zones, (b) highest predictability (routes, orbits, recovery windows), and (c) highest defender alertness.

That’s why day-one SEAD/strike and follow-on CSAR score so badly: intact IADS + predictable corridors + defenders ready. But over the long run, repeated support missions (CAS or helo lift/medevac) can accumulate more total risk because they happen every day and often under time pressure.

So the right answer might be two answers: tactically most dangerous per sortie (initial penetration/CSAR in a SAM-heavy environment) versus operationally most dangerous over a campaign (routine low-alt support that can’t stop).

The future twist is that we’re trying to move the “most dangerous” parts of aviation missions onto unmanned or optionally manned systems—loyal wingmen, decoy drones, autonomous EW, and robotic resupply aircraft.

In that framework, the “most dangerous mission” becomes the one that *still requires* a human in the aircraft: complex ROE, close proximity to friendlies/civilians, or missions where human judgment is demanded by policy even if autonomy could technically fly it.

Also, autonomy doesn’t remove danger; it relocates it. A jammed datalink, compromised software supply chain, or misclassification by AI can create mission failure with strategic consequences. So while unmanned systems can take the highest-attrition penetration roles, the overall mission set may become more about resilience against EW/cyber and less about pure kinetic threat.
