What is the hardest phase of BUD/S?

I’ve been reading a lot about Navy SEAL BUD/S and I keep seeing different answers on what the hardest part actually is. Some people say it’s obviously Hell Week, others say First Phase as a whole is worse, and some claim later phases break you in different ways.

For context: I’m not trying to LARP as a future operator. I’m just a regular guy who trains (running, calisthenics, swimming laps) and I’m curious from a realistic standpoint—what phase is considered the hardest and why? Is it the cold/wet/sleep deprivation in Hell Week, the constant “beatdowns” and injury attrition in First Phase, or something in Second/Third that people overlook? Would appreciate grounded takes, especially from anyone who served or follows the community closely.

A fun future-facing thought experiment: if you gave candidates powered load-bearing assistance, better thermal protection, and biometric monitoring, would BUD/S still be “hard” in the same way? Yes—because the course is fundamentally about human decision-making, teamwork, and composure.

Tech can reduce some physical penalties (cold exposure mitigation, recovery tracking), but it can’t replace the requirement to stay calm, follow procedures, and keep moving when you’re miserable.

That’s why the debate persists. Hell Week is extreme physiology. The broader phases test the human “control system” over time—attention, humility, and resilience. That’s not something you can fully outsource to gear or robotics.
