I’m putting together a realistic comms setup for training events and field exercises (not an active-duty unit, more of an organized group that takes safety and rules seriously). I keep seeing everything from cheap “tactical” handhelds to very expensive encrypted systems, and I’m not sure what actually makes sense for “military use.”
What matters most in your experience: ruggedness, range, battery life, interoperability, encryption, accessories (headsets/PTT), or ease of programming? Also, is it better to focus on handheld radios, a manpack style, or a vehicle/base radio for a small team? I’m looking for a grounded answer: what platforms/features are considered the best and why, and what’s realistic for training without getting into anything sketchy.
