I’m putting together a realistic kit for training days at the range and occasional field exercises with buddies (not active duty, but we try to keep it “military-style” and practical). The big thing I’m trying to solve is hearing protection that works in loud environments but still lets you hear commands, movement, and comms.
I’ve used basic foam earplugs and cheap muffs, but they either block too much or don’t fit well under a helmet. I also see a lot of “tactical” electronic options and in-ear systems that claim to work with radios. For actual military use (or at least the closest civilian equivalent), what’s considered the best hearing protection setup right now? Looking for recommendations based on real use: comfort for long wear, compatibility with helmets/eye pro, ability to hear speech, and reliability in dirt/rain. If there are “do not buy” pitfalls, I’d love to hear those too.
