Putting together a small emergency kit for day hikes and occasional backcountry weekends. I’ve got a basic first aid pouch, light, and a paper map/compass, but I realized I don’t actually have a dedicated emergency whistle.
What’s the best emergency whistle in real use—something loud, reliable in rain/cold, and not huge? I’m seeing plastic “storm” style whistles, metal pea whistles, and some cheap multi-pack ones that look sketchy.
Not trying to overthink it, just want something I can clip to a pack strap and trust if I’m hurt or stuck. Any specific models you’ve used? Bonus points if it won’t freeze up or fall apart.
