I’m trying to tighten up my emergency kit and I keep going in circles on comms. I do some weekend hiking and occasional solo trips where there’s zero cell coverage, but I also want something useful for storms/power outages at home. I’m not trying to be tactical-for-the-sake-of-it—just something reliable when things go sideways.

I’ve looked at satellite messengers (Garmin inReach style), PLBs, and even the idea of a handheld ham radio, but I don’t know what’s actually “best” vs what’s just cool gear. Priorities for me: it should work when I’m stressed, battery should last, and it should give rescuers a clear location. Two-way messaging sounds great, but I’m not sure if it’s worth the subscription.
