What features matter most when buying uniforms?

I’m looking to buy a couple sets of uniforms for range days, hiking, and some volunteer events (nothing official-issued). I’ve worn basic surplus before, but I’m not sure what’s actually worth paying for versus marketing.

I care about comfort and durability more than looking “high speed.” I’m also trying to avoid stuff that falls apart after a few washes or has annoying seams. If you were buying uniforms today, what features matter most—fabric blend, stitching, pocket layout, fit, camo pattern, NIR compliance, etc.? Any specific things you always check before buying?

Look at how WWII armies moved from wool and heavy cotton to more practical field garments as mobility and combined arms intensified; or how Cold War forces emphasized standardized kit to support mass logistics.
