I’m trying to build functional strength (not just bigger muscles). I’m not training for bodybuilding—more like real-world tasks: carrying heavy stuff, moving fast with a pack, pulling my own bodyweight, getting up off the ground, and not gassing out.
Right now I lift a few days a week (basic dumbbells + barbell at a small gym) and I jog sometimes, but I feel like it doesn’t translate as well as it should. For example, I can bench decent but carrying two loaded duffels up stairs wrecks me.
If you had to pick the top exercises that build functional strength for military-style fitness, what would you prioritize? Also how would you organize them (sets/reps or sessions) without overcomplicating it?
