I’m trying to get a realistic sense of what using radios is actually like outside of brochures and YouTube reviews. I’ve used cheap civilian handhelds for hiking, but I’m curious about military-style radios and field comms in general: what fails first, what matters most (antenna, battery, programming, PTT, headset), and how much of “range” is marketing vs real terrain.
If you’ve used radios in the field (training, work, volunteering, even SAR), what equipment were you on, what conditions, and what surprised you? Also interested in what you’d do differently if you had to build a dependable kit for rough weather and lots of movement. Not looking for anything illegal—just practical user experiences and lessons learned.
