I’m putting together a simple field hydration setup and I keep going back and forth on classic military canteens vs modern bottles/bladders. I’ve used cheap plastic bottles hiking, but I’m looking for something tougher that doesn’t get funky, works with gloves, and can live in a pouch on a belt/pack without leaking.
For those who’ve actually used canteens in training, field problems, deployments, long hikes, etc.: what held up, what failed, and what annoyed you the most? I’m especially curious about taste issues, freezing in winter, cleaning, caps/straps breaking, and whether metal canteens are worth it. Also: do you still run canteens today, or did you switch to Nalgenes / bladders / something else?
