I’m in my mid-20s, working full-time in IT, and I’m seriously considering joining part-time rather than going active duty. I want something that feels meaningful (training, a real mission, some challenge), but I also can’t blow up my civilian career. I keep hearing “National Guard vs Reserves,” and I’m not sure what’s actually best in practice.
What are the best part-time military opportunities if you want solid training, a useful MOS/rate/AFSC, and a reasonable schedule? I’m open to different branches. I’m also trying to understand what the real time commitment looks like beyond the “one weekend a month” line, and how often deployments or activations actually happen. Any advice on what to look for in a unit, and what to avoid, would help a lot.
