I’m trying to put together a basic kit without spending a fortune, and body armor is the last piece I’m stuck on. I’m not looking for anything “high speed,” just something reputable for training days at the range and general preparedness. Budget matters, but I don’t want junk that falls apart or has sketchy specs.
What’s the best budget-friendly body armor setup right now (plate carrier + plates, or soft armor)? I’m seeing tons of ads for “III+” plates, AR500 steel, and random brands I’ve never heard of. Also curious what you all consider the minimum acceptable standard: NIJ certified vs “tested,” ceramic vs UHMWPE, and what to avoid when shopping used. Any guidance appreciated.
