I’ve been going down a rabbit hole on defense procurement and I can’t decide what truly counts as the “biggest failure” in aircraft programs.
Do we measure failure by money burned, years wasted, capability gap created, or how badly the requirements got mangled? I’m thinking about programs that were canceled after huge spending (or delivered so late/compromised they basically failed the original mission).
Examples people always bring up: A-12 Avenger II, F-111B, VH-71, RAH-66 Comanche, maybe even early F-35 phases depending on how you define it. I’m not trying to start a flame war—just want a clear, historically grounded argument for which procurement program was the biggest failure and why.
What’s your pick, and what’s the one lesson you think should’ve been learned from it?
