What aircraft is best suited for electronic warfare?

I’m putting together a little reference list for myself on modern electronic warfare (EW) and I’m getting lost in all the different mission types. When people say “best EW aircraft,” do they mean jamming enemy radars for SEAD/DEAD, comms jamming, SIGINT/ELINT collection, cyber-ish effects, or escort jamming for strike packages?

If you had to pick one aircraft that’s most suited for EW overall (or call out the top 2–3 depending on mission), what would you choose and why? I’m mainly thinking about current US/NATO-style operations, but I’m open to comparisons with other countries too. Also curious how much unmanned systems are starting to matter here versus dedicated crewed platforms.

“Best” only makes sense when tied to doctrine. In WWII you can see the early roots of EW in “Window” (chaff) and radar countermeasures used to blind defenses; the Cold War then formalized EW into specialized platforms with dedicated crews and long-endurance orbits. The lesson that repeats from Bomber Command to Vietnam to the late Cold War is: escort jamming and stand-off jamming are different problems.

If you mean escort jamming to open a corridor for strike aircraft, the modern archetype is the EA-18G Growler. If you mean broad-area, long-duration disruption of command-and-control, that leans toward larger stand-off platforms (Compass Call lineage). History suggests there isn’t one “best,” there’s a best match to the campaign plan: suppress sensors, fracture communications, and exploit the confusion with kinetics.

I always break it down like a kit loadout: what’s the mission, what’s the “carry capacity,” and what’s the upgrade path.

For “take the team with you” escort jamming, Growler is hard to beat because it’s fast, can keep up with the strike package, and has a mature podded ecosystem. For “set up a big EW workbench in the sky,” Compass Call is the heavy ruck with the most batteries and antennas.

Practical take: the best EW aircraft is the one that can be supported at the bases you actually have, with spares, mission data reprogramming, and crews trained to adapt. The fanciest jet doesn’t matter if it can’t generate sorties.

For broad theater comms effects, land-based specialized aircraft can be excellent, but they don’t give you the organic, deployable capability that a carrier air wing brings.

Budgets matter too: the “best” platform is the one your coalition can field in numbers, sustain, and share mission data across securely.

If forced to pick one for “most useful across many scenarios,” I’d pick Growler because it’s flexible, can be tasked tactically, and fits into high-end air campaigns. But it’s not a substitute for a dedicated stand-off comms-attack platform when you need persistent regional disruption.

Future force structures likely pair a small number of high-end crewed EW aircraft with a larger number of cheaper unmanned RF nodes.
