Should modern armies invest more in tanks or drones?

I’m trying to wrap my head around where modern armies should put the next big chunk of money: more tanks/armor, or more drones/UAVs.

I’m not in the military, just a civilian who follows defense news and conflict coverage. Watching recent wars, it feels like drones are everywhere (recon, FPV strikes, loitering munitions), but then you still see armored thrusts, mechanized infantry, and tanks used as mobile protected firepower.

So if you had to prioritize over the next 5–10 years, would you buy/upgrade more tanks (active protection, better sensors, new ammo), or shift the budget toward drones (ISR, loitering, counter-UAS, autonomy)? Also curious how you’d split it for different missions: peer conflict vs counterinsurgency vs defending home territory.

If we’re talking doctrine rather than hype cycles, the answer is usually “both, but in different proportions depending on the campaign.” History is full of wonder-weapons that looked decisive until the enemy adapted. Chariots didn’t make infantry obsolete; aircraft didn’t make artillery obsolete; tanks didn’t make foot soldiers obsolete.

WWII is instructive: tanks were never independent magic, they were decisive when integrated with infantry, engineers, artillery, and air support (see Guderian’s emphasis on combined arms, and later Soviet Deep Battle thinking). In the Cold War, NATO and Warsaw Pact planning assumed huge armored formations—yet even then, survivability was tied to air defense, electronic warfare, and logistics.

Drones today resemble an acceleration of reconnaissance and fires: they compress the kill chain. That’s enormous. But the fundamental need to seize and hold terrain still favors protected mobility and direct fire, which armor provides. Ukraine is a grim reminder: drones find and attrit, but someone still has to clear trenches, breach minefields, and occupy positions.

My “historian’s” take: invest heavily in drones and counter-drone measures to avoid being blind, but do not divest from armor—modernize it and, more importantly, modernize the combined-arms system around it.

From an equipment nerd angle, I think the framing should be “tank + drone ecosystem” instead of tanks vs drones.

Drones are basically the new must-have piece of kit for units: cheap quadcopters for squad recon, fixed-wing ISR at battalion/brigade, plus loitering munitions for quick fires. But that doesn’t replace what a tank does: protected, stabilized direct fire that can punch through walls, trees, and bad weather with less dependency on datalinks.

Practical procurement idea: buy lots of small drones and the boring stuff that makes them work—spares, batteries, rugged cases, training time, antenna kits, secure tablets. At the same time, upgrade armor with thermal sights, laser warning, better comms, and active protection where possible.

Also don’t forget the “field gear” side: counter-UAS is becoming as standard as helmets. Camouflage nets, thermal blankets, signature management, and basic discipline (light/noise) suddenly matter again.

Drones are not a replacement for armor. Drones are a sensor and a munition delivery method. Tanks are protected shock action and direct fire—when you need to break something and live through it. If you think a country can defend itself with FPV drones and vibes, you’re setting it up to lose the first time the enemy jams, adapts tactics, or just brings mass.

That said: anyone buying tanks in 2026 without taking drones and counter-UAS deadly serious is also delusional. If your armor force can’t operate under constant observation, it’s a scrapyard.

So no, don’t “pick one.” Build a force that can see, shoot, move, and survive in a drone-saturated environment. The rest is internet theater.

Tanks still solve a problem drones don’t: they combine protection, mobility, and high-volume accurate direct fire under armor. A drone can hit a point target; a tank can suppress, breach, and support infantry continuously while taking small arms and fragments all day.

Where tanks got punished recently is predictable: operating without layered air defense, without EW support, without engineer breach assets, and with poor dispersion/tempo. Add top-attack threats and constant ISR, and you need upgrades.

If an army invests in tanks, it should invest in:

- Active protection systems and improved roof protection/top-attack mitigation

- Better thermals and 360° situational awareness

- Integrated counter-UAS (hard kill + soft kill) at company/battalion level

- Better recovery and spare parts pipelines (the unsexy part)

I’d avoid “either/or.” A modern armored brigade should have organic drones at every level, and the tank fleet should be smaller-but-ready rather than large-but-hollow.

My vote: increase drones everywhere, but make sure they’re integrated with air defense and fires—otherwise you just add more things to get jammed or shot down.

What I’d like to see armies do is make drones as “standard” as night vision: every platoon trained, every mission rehearsed with UAV integration, and a real counter-drone plan. Then keep a hard-hitting armored force for when politics and reality demand a conventional fight.

Basically: drones for reach and awareness, tanks for force and staying power.

I look at this through fieldcraft and survivability: drones make hiding harder. Signature management is becoming a life-or-death skill for everyone—tank crews and infantry alike.

Tanks help with survival because armor forgives mistakes that would kill dismounted troops. But tanks are also big, hot, loud targets that drones can spot if crews get sloppy with movement, idling, or parking patterns.

If armies invest in drones, they also need to invest in the basics: camouflage discipline, decoys, rapid digging/berms, thermal masking where practical, and operating in shorter exposure windows.

So I’d say: buy drones, yes—but don’t forget the boring “survive under observation” training. Otherwise you’ll just provide the enemy better footage of your losses.

Drones require a constant flow of consumables: batteries, props, motors, antennas, and trained techs. Plus you need a disciplined spares system because attrition is baked in.

Also: engineers matter more in a drone-saturated battlefield. Minefields, obstacles, and fortifications slow armor and concentrate forces—exactly what drones and artillery punish.

My recommendation: invest in drones and counter-drone, but don’t neglect bridging, route clearance, breaching kits, and recovery vehicles. Otherwise tanks can’t exploit anything even if they survive.

A workable 5–10 year strategy could look like:

- Ubiquitous small ISR drones down to squads

- Brigade-level strike drones/loitering munitions for responsive fires

- Robust EW and counter-UAS as a “fourth maneuver element”

- A modernized armored core used in dispersed, timed concentrations with engineers and SHORAD

The key is combined arms under transparency: assume you’re seen, plan to deceive, and design units to keep fighting when networks degrade.

Think unmanned ground vehicles carrying sensors, extra ammo, smoke, or even acting as decoys ahead of a tank platoon. Pair that with aerial drones for overwatch, and you reduce risk to crews while extending the formation’s eyes and electronic footprint.

Also, autonomy isn’t just sci-fi: even limited autonomy like waypoint navigation, target cueing, and auto-return when jammed can dramatically reduce operator workload.

So if an army is choosing where to invest, I’d put money into a layered unmanned stack (air + ground) plus counter-UAS/EW. Tanks still matter, but they should be the protected centerpiece of a robotics-enabled combined-arms team, not lone wolves driving into a drone-fed kill zone.
