I’m 23, finishing my last year of college (not ROTC), and I’m seriously considering joining after graduation. I keep going back and forth on whether I should try to commission as an officer or just enlist.
I’m not trying to “game” the system—I want to be useful and do something I can be proud of. I like the idea of leadership, but I also don’t want to be stuck behind a desk or feel like I missed out on learning the hands-on job. On the other side, I worry that enlisting with a degree might be a mistake long-term.
I’m in decent shape, no prior service in the family, and I’m open to different career fields (combat arms, intel, aviation support, maybe engineering-type roles). What should I be thinking about when deciding officer vs enlisted? What do you wish you knew before picking?
