I’m a high school senior trying to figure out the smartest way to start a military career. I’m interested in serving, but I’m torn between enlisting right after graduation or going to college with ROTC first.
My goals: I want leadership opportunities eventually, but I also don’t want to take on a ton of student debt. I’m physically active but not a super athlete, and I’m not sure yet what job/MOS I’d want long-term (I’m looking at intel, aviation support, maybe engineering).
If I do ROTC, is it actually worth it compared to enlisting and trying to go officer later? Does ROTC “lock you in” to something too early? And if I’m not 100% sure I want to be an officer, is ROTC still a good move or should I just enlist first and learn the basics? Looking for honest pros/cons from people who’ve been around this.
