Should armies prefer wheeled or tracked vehicles?

I keep seeing procurement news where some armies lean hard into 8x8 wheeled platforms, while others still prioritize tracked IFVs and tanks. I’m not in the military, just a defense nerd who follows exercises and reads way too many after-action reports.

If you had to set a general preference for an army (not a single unit), would you go mostly wheeled or mostly tracked? I’m thinking about:

- Deployability (road marches vs heavy transport)

- Terrain (mud, snow, mountains, urban)

- Maintenance and fuel burn

- Survivability (mines/IEDs, artillery fragments)

- Lifecycle cost and how many vehicles you can actually afford

I know the real answer is “mix,” but I’m curious where people land and why. Any historical examples or modern lessons learned that point one way or the other?

Also where do things like MRAPs fit in? They’re wheeled but seem “combat proven” for mines/IEDs. Does that make wheels more viable in high-threat areas, or is that a totally different kind of threat than what tracked IFVs face?

If I’m designing an army for uncertain futures, I bias toward a modular mix: wheeled maneuver/sustainment for operational tempo and presence, plus a smaller but very credible tracked heavy force that can concentrate and win localized battles. The key is not just buying vehicles, but making sure doctrine, engineers, air defense, EW, and logistics match the chosen mobility profile.

I expect a future where armies field heavier tracked platforms as protected command/firepower hubs, surrounded by cheaper wheeled and unmanned vehicles that extend sensing and logistics. In that model, you don’t ask “wheeled or tracked,” you ask “what’s manned, what’s unmanned, and what can be replaced quickly.”

Near term though, humans still do most maintenance and recovery, so the old tradeoffs are very real.
